The Canal du Midi should not be missed. Designed in the 17th Century by Pierre Paul Riquet, from Béziers, it was developed to link the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean.
It was built over 14 years, being 241km long with 63 working locks! In 1996, the Canal became a Unesco World Heritage site and the waterway is now mainly focused on recreation.
The canal is popular for boat hire and the tow paths are a magnet for walkers and cyclists.
